Formerly known as Spencerville Free Methodist Church, Crossway Christian Church, begun in the summer of 1899, the first Free Methodist tent meeting was held on Colesville Road at Clovely, Maryland. Rev. A.G. Miller, a Free Methodist missionary-evangelist was the speaker. The fall of that year, with sixteen charter members, Rev. A.G. Miller organized worship to what become Spencerville Free Methodist church. Services were held in the Spencerville Hall until the fall of 1905.
In the summer of 1905 work began on the original church on the ground next to the Spencerville Hall. The ground that the original church was built on was donated by Mr. Albert Sargent. A golden Anniversary celebration was observed in 1949 while Rev. L.H. Kelley was the pastor.
During the years of 1952-1954 the building was relocated back of the street and was extensively remodeled. The Rev. W.N Snider and the Rev. C.H. Barnett were pastors during this period. The Cornerstone was laid in October 1954 and is easily see at the front right side of the church.
As they continued to grow, plans were made to enlarge the building, and ground breaking took place on May 19, 1963 and construction began in August of that year.
The present church was dedicated on October 11, 1964 under the pastor, Rev. Robert J. Magee, Sr. The parsonage was erected in April 1965.
God was not done with this place, even during COVID we have seen opening door for a new life to spring forward. After a year in a transition September 2021 marks a new dawn when Rev. Ebenezer and Lauren Murengezi and their 5 children, were sent here to relaunch Crossway Christian Church, with a fresh vision to build Acts 2:42-47 community; marked with a deep love for one another, a devotion to the teachings of the apostles, prayer, and fellowship.
